Downsizing to a smaller home is a trend some baby boomers are considering for its numerous benefits. A smaller home with a smaller mortgage can improve cash flow, and also fewer rooms to maintain means more time spent on activities you enjoy. Smaller homes can also mean a smaller carbon footprint because one needs less energy for a smaller space.

While 80 percent of Americans older than 50 own a home, only 17 percent feel they are completely financially prepared for retirement. Home equity can be a valuable resource to stretch money into one’s retirement years, and investing in a smaller home may be an excellent strategy for some.

Many people, including aging baby boomers, are considering joining the tiny house trend to save money and continue enjoying their lives with less home related upkeep. Tiny houses are small, but they can range from simple in design to highly luxurious, and some are designed specifically with wheelchair accessibility in mind.
